FAQ:Releases
(Redirected from Releases)
This is an Official FAQ to answer common questions about metashell releases. Should you have a question/answer you feel should be placed on this FAQ, please state so in the comments/talk page.
Thanks
When will metashell be released?
As of right now metashell is not on an official regular release schedule.
The main reason for this being the majority of updates will deal with new features and bug fixes. Unlike something like a distribution, where stuff is every-changing, once a stable version of metashell is released, everything should be functioning to par.
This does not mean no further releases will occur. New releases (on the same version level) will come out for bug fixes, security updates, and minor changes. New versions (releases of a new branch) will occur when a large set of changes, or features are rolled out.
So to answer the question, the date and version will vary, please see the news section on the Source Forge Project Page or the downloads page. Also check out the Devlog to see the status of the next release and metashell overall.
You make it sound like metashell will never have a new version, what gives?
You misunderstood, metashell will absoultuty have new releases, both new version branches as well as updates.
Let me explain, metashell does not have a set release schedule, because we do not know when we will finish a new rollout. New versions depend on new features, which are a result from community interaction and request. As well as bug reports, the more community contribution, the sooner releases will be made.
Version X doesn't work, why did you release it?
Please visit the help:contents page.
Will metashell be released in binary form?
Direct executables, No. Binary Packages, yes.
Binary releases are platform specific, and there is no was for us to test every hardware platform, nor compile and release for every platform.
However, we will release binary packages, such as .rpm, .dep, etc. These will be released for common platforms, such as ix86 and x86_64. However the source should be usable for any platform. No platform specific (or even OS specific code is used -- other then libraries) code is every used, if you have problems compiling on a specific platform, please create a Bug Report.
Will metashell be packaged with X packager, or for X distribution?
We always need "Packagers", if you are interested, please contact a developer.
So to better answer the question, it may not originally be packaged the way you want it, however if you are willing to package it, we'll release it.
Does metashell work on X distro?
Well, maybe. Linux is Linux, is Linux. Right?
metashell is written on a variety of platforms, but is very distro independent. If you find an issue with a specific distro, please create a Bug Report.
Does metashell work on BSD/OSX?
As of right now it is unconfirmed if metashell will run under BSD or OSX. If you have any incite please discuss so on the forums.
On a different note, metashell does work on the Mac platform if running Linux.
Is there a Windows port?
Frankly speaking, no.
metashell uses Linux libraries, so would not compile under windows. However if you use something like 'Cygwin' you may be able to get it to compile if the libraries compiled as well.
Let me note however, these is discussion of a Windows port of metashell, that would be native to Windows. This of course being a replacement/extension of the current command prompt. Let the development team know if you would like to assist.
